Remember To Relax!

Its not as painful as you think! Everyone has different pain thresholds. The first wax is always the most uncomfortable. The more you wax, the less it hurts as the hair becomes thinner. Some of my clients have said taking Ibuprofen (if doctor allows) 30 minutes prior to their appointment helps decrease sensitivity and inflammatory response following waxing.

Contraindications & Skin Lifting

Waxing is not recommend for people suffering from diabetes, autoimmune disease or poor circulation as they are more susceptible to infection. Thin, sensitive skin is more vulnerable to lifting and sensitivity during waxing. Prescription medication such as antibiotics, Accutane, Retin-a, Renova, Avage or any skin thinning topical/oral medication can cause thinning of the skin. If you are using skin care products that contain salicylic acid, glycolic acid or alpha hydroxyl acid (AHA), these can cause the skin to lift. Even with precautions, every skin type reacts differently to waxing. Sometimes, just having dehydrated or dry skin can cause lifting. If you are unsure about what you are using, just ask.

Hair Length

If you think your hair is so long it can be braided, please trim a little! If your hair is so short you feel stubble, let it grow! Hair needs to be about 1/2 inch in length (about the length of your pinky nail). If you shave, please allow about two weeks of growth. I do not trim hair. It leaves my room unhygienic and cannot be properly cleaned between clients.

Keep It Clean

The hair follicles remain open for up to 12 hours after waxing. That's plenty of time for bacteria to grow if the skin isn't kept clean.

  • Avoid the sun immediately after waxing and wear sun screen.

  • Don't apply deodorant for the rest of the day after underarm waxing.

  • Don't go tanning the same day as getting waxed.

  • Avoid hot tubs for at least 48 hours after waxing.

  • Do not use exfoliating products and loofas for at least 24 hours after waxing.

  • Avoid touching the area that has been waxed.

Redness & Irritation

Expect the skin to be a little sensitive and red after your first wax. This should disappear within a matter of hours. You may "break out" in what looks like tiny goose-bumps or hives (histamine reaction), which is normal. Some of my clients have taken Benadryl (if doctor allows) 30 minutes prior to waxing or apply Benadryl cream after waxing.

  • Applying a cool washcloth to the area

  • Apply a soothing cream such as A+D cream with zinc oxide.

  • Avoid heavy exercise or sweating for at least 24 hours after waxing.

  • Do not wear tight clothing or have sex, friction will aggravate the skin.

Ingrown Hairs

Follow a daily exfoliation regime to avoid the build up of dead skin cells, which will help prevent ingrown hairs.

  • Start exfoliating 24 hours after waxing or when tenderness subsides.

  • Exfoliate daily with anti-bacterial soap, and a mitt or brush.

  • Apply PFB or wash with Mandelic Cleansing Scrub (available for purchase in the spa.

  • Do not pick ingrown hairs. They easily become inflamed and will leave scars. Instead, apply a warm compress and a ointment to the infected area.
